MAMAKU BUSH ROAD.

CLASSIFICATION REMAINS.

Council Stands Firm.

The classification of the Mamaku hill road was again before the Malamata County Council at the August meeting on Friday, when the Rotorua Borough Council wrote again protesting against the Classification as a fifth-class lead and asking that the decision of the council lie reconsidered. The letter also asked if Mr. Fitzgerald, the county engineer, had seen coriectiy teported during the nearing of the Court case against the Rotorua Bus Company in saying that “ the Mamaku hill road was constructed for light car traffic and tourist traffic and that his council had no intention of opening it for heavier traffic.”. A further request was for information as to when the classification of a portion of the Tokoroa road from fourth to fifth class had been made. The engineer then read the remarks made by him in Court.

Cr. Cox : That is a clear statement that the road is fit only for light traffic.

Cr. Wilson said he was on the road the other day and the Rotorua portion was cutting up.

Cr. Allen said that if heavy traffic was allowed no traffic at all would get through. The chairman said he had been congratulated by a well - known motorist on the council’s stand. Cr. Cox said the classification did not debar ordinary service cars. The Chairman : The correspondence in the press is undoubtedly inspired. Cr. Cox said the Rotorua County Council had recently put on inspectoi*s and had restricted traffic to 2 h tons on all the county .main roads. Cr. Bruce moved that in the public interest the council could see no reason to alter its classification and that the clerk and the engineer confer with regard to the reply. Cr. Allen seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The engineer said he had copies of the Matamata Record which dealt with the matter fully, so far as certain aspects of the case were concerned, for the perusal of councillors.
