The Finlay Cup. WON BY CAMBRIDGE. By Three Points to Nil. A great crowd saw Matamata lose the Finlay Cup to Cambridge or. Saturday, after a gruelling game played in perfect weather. The visitors deserved their win and were the better team on the day. Playing a single purpose game the visitors worked to their forwards throughout and left the issue to them. Their heavier pack lasted in good style and justified the confidence reposed in them. At the finish the blue pack was still battling away on the home line. The Matamata backs more polish but did not get going properly at any stage. Up till half time there was little between the teams, though Matamata did not inspire confidence. From ten minutes after half-time the blacks never really looked like winning and their best efforts were easily repulsed. Chances were thrown away, while there were also several inexcusable breaks on defence, with the result that the blues, playing a typical cup game, got home by three points.
BOYCE CUP. Win for Matamata. Waipa junior representatives lost the Boyce Cup to the first challengers of the season, Matamata, at Te Awamutu on Saturday by six tries, two converted—22 points—to a try and a penalty goal—six points. WAIKATO UNION. Management Committee. The management committee of the Waikato Rugby Union held a meeting on Friday, Mr. T. B. Booth presiding. Delegates present were:— Messrs. Harris (Taupiri), Haselden (Waipa), Whiting (Hamilton), Chapman (Putaruru), Mclntyre (Morrinsville), Clarkin (Raglan), Yardley (Matamata), Cooper (Referees’ Association), Speight (treasurer), Thompson (secretary), Te Hoe Protest. A protest from the Te Hoe Club against the Orini Club - playing a man named 'Wilson, who, it was alleged, was a member of the United Club, was dealt with and was referred back to the Taupiri sub-union who originally had the matter under review. Kanfurly Shield. The Wairarapa union notified that it was treating Waikato’s challenge for the Ranfurly Shield as a return of the fixture played at Hamilton last season. A previous letter from Wairarapa accepted the date. It decided to reply stating that Waikato looked upon the fixture as a shield match. Referees’ Passes. A request from the Waikato Referees’ Association that all active referees be allowed free passes to Waikato representative fixtures was' declined. Binnie Cup. A challenge was received from the Matamata union for its champion team, Matamata, for the Binnie Cup, a trophy for competition by champion sub-union teams. As the ‘ time for challenging does not expire until the end of the month, the matter of arranging the fixtures, was left in the hands of the chairman and secretary. Finlay Cup. The remaining Finlay Cup fixtures were made as follow: August 3—v. Morrinsville. August 17—v. Waipa. Boyce Cup. Mr. Haselden informed the meeting that the dates allotted for Boyce Cup matches were as follow: August 10—v. Cambridge. August 24—v. Taupiri. September 7—v. Morrinsville. East Coast Tour. In his report of the East Coast tcur, the manager, Mr. W. T. Thompson, said the whole cost of the tour to the Waikato union was
£166 Is 6d. Grants by the unions visited and the New Zealand Rugby Union totalled £2ll Bs. In seconding a motion of thanks to the manager of the team, Mr. Yardley said the manager had apparently carried out his arduous duties well. However, it was of no use the executive congratulating itself on having carried out a successful tour—that would simply be whitewashing themselves. Protests had been made against so many matches being undertaken; also to the number of men sent away originally. It would have been lfetter, as was advocated, to send 20 men and send back for men if required. If the members of the committee consulted the players they would t learn that the tour was too strenuous. Mr. Chapman considered the tour had been a success but asked for a return, to be produced at the next meeting, of men who had been injured and the number of matches each had played in. Waikato v. Auckland. Mr. H. T. Haselden (Waipa) was appointed manager of the Waikato team to play Auckland on August 3.
