Mateer’s Large String. The increased patronage which is being accorded Trainer R. J. Mateer at Matamata has necessitated the erection of four more loose boxes. Mateer now has 10 horses located at his establishment.

The most forward is Valroe, which got on the winning list last season and was expected to run prominently at the Matamata meeting. Valroe, however, jarred a joint on the morning of the meeting ami uas not started since.

Valstreet is being kept in work and is looking fit. Several placings fell to Valstreet .ast season but a certain amount nf hairier snyiiess spoilt several efforts.

Mr. G. Carolan’s Royal Visitor (Lucullus —Sports Queen), a half brother to a winner in Sports King, is furnishing nicely and should be ready for the summer. A daughter of Queenie Soult by Lapidary, the property of Mr. C. Casey, gives every appearance of being a winner during the coming season. If she is as fast as her dam Mr. Casey should reap good returns. Other equines that take the eye are Mr. J. Headley’s rising two-year-old by Lapidary—Lido and a bay gelding by Lapidary—ConquCrrr mare.

Taken all round, Mateer has quite a promising string, which on present appearances should pay its way. At a meeting of the Matamata Racing Cluh on Ft may night it was decided nor - 0 approve the application o* F. E. Lark for a trainer's li.-i.-e. on the grounds that the chib did not think the applicant had the qualifications. Valwin was recently under offer to a Sydney pony enthusiast but no business resulted.

Jones, formerly trainer of Commendation ■ and several other good performers, has taken up his residence at Matamata and is commencing a training establishment or. Peria road.
