PUTARURU RUGBY UNION. Weekly Meeting. The usual weekly meeting of the Putaruru Rugby Union was held on Tuesday evening, Mr. J. W. Barr Brown presiding over a good attendance. The referee’s report on the match between Putaruru and Arapuni last Saturday week brought under the union’s notice the tendency of club members to overlook the rule in reference to playing in club colours. It was unanimously decided to bring this before the Putaruru club, which appeared to be the principal offender. The union also dealt with the ordering off of Carroll (Putaruru) for kicking an Arapuni player on the head. No appearance was made by Carroll and he was disqualified for the remainder of the season. Tentative arrangements were made for the annual presentation social. REP. MATCHES. Tauranga 14, Matamata 5. Tauranga defeated Matamata at Tauranga bn Saturday by 14 points to 5. Although the match was played in the worst weather experienced for many years the game was fast and open, the forwards mainly dominating play. Tauranga started off well and -finished strongly, the second and third spells being even. For Tauranga Merrilees, H. Kelly, Turner and lies scored tries, one being converted. JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES. Matamata juniors beat Hamilton juniors at Matamata by 12 points to 11. WAIKATO TOURING TEAM. The Waikato team commenced its games against East Coast unions on Wednesday, meeting Hawke’s Bay at Bastings. J. Vosper opened the scoring for Waikato with a characteristic try through the centre. This was converted by W. Mitchell. Hawke’s Bay then put Waikato on a prolonged defence and scored three tries, one of which was converted, before halftime.
In the second half the Waikato backs worked with precision and Mills and Anderson (Morrinsville) each got a try to equalise the scores. A Hawke’s Bay critic described Anderson’s try as being the result of a wonderful back movement. The match under review is the first between the Waikato and Hawke’s Bay unions since 1925, when Waikato piayed the great Ranfurly Shield team at Dannevirke and was beaten by 64—8. The defeat by such a large margin did Waikato a great amount of good and it may be said that it marked the raising of the standard of Waikato football. On the following Saturday Waikato ran Wairarapa to a point and then beat Eush, Wanganui and King Country. Of the men playing for Waikato on Wednesday only S. Thomas, P. Quin, I. Johnstone, W. Mitchell and D. Bourke were on the previous tour. The Waikato team played the third game of its East Coast tour on Saturday against the East Coast union, winning by 15 points to 11. The Waikato team is now playing without a recognised half-back, P. Quin taking the position on Saturday. S. Thomas was also an absentee from the side with an injured hand.
The remaining matches of the tour are against Poverty Bay at Gisborne on Thursday and Bay of Plenty at Whakatane on Saturday. The results to date are : Drew with Hawke’s Bay, 11—11 ; lost to Wairoa, 6—B ; beat East Coast, 15—11.
