MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

APRIL MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council was at- ! tended by Crs. J. W. Anderson (chairman, Tirau), S. H. Judd (Maungatautari), J. Bruce (Karapiro), W. S. Wilson (Matamata), K. S. Cox (Tokoroa), W. H. Allen (Okoroire), P. Dee (Te Poi). Also in attendance were Messrs C. F. E. Barton (clerk) and M. E. Fitzgerald (engineer). Leave of absence was granted to Crs. E. J. Darby (Putaruru) and H. C. Rollett (Peria). Estimate Wanted. Mr. Scherer, of Waharoa, wrote enclosing a petition from the ratepayers asking for a loan to metal a road. An estimate of the cost was also | asked for, as well as the rates likely to be charged each ratepayer. The engineer was instructed to 3upply the figures asked for. Waharoa Road. J. Pickup wrote complaining of the shocking condition of the Waharoa road as from Ogden’s comer to the railway crossing. The reply of the council had gone 1 forward that metalling was authorised and the work would be put in hand shortly.—The clerk’s reply was approved. Back Lichfield Road. A. H. Dukeson, senr,. wrote asking that the back Lichfield road be repaired and metalled before winter, as it would be almost impossible for the settlers to get carting done. The letter continued: “ Surely a portion of the rates collected from us can be spent in improvements on this road. Hoping your council can see its way to grade and metal it as far I as the top of Allen’s hill. The dis- I tance from there to the present metal is about half a mile. If this were well done it would do us over the worst patch.” On the recommendation of the works committee it was decided to patch the road in bad places for the winter months with rock, and that permanent improvements be effected

> next summer with the assistance of a Public Works grant. Okauia Stop Bank. ' Mr. M. J. Wooderson, Okauia, wrote complaining that a stop bank erected to prevent flood water from the road coming on to his property had resulted in the washing out a right-of-way on his property between two of his paddocks. The writer suggested that compensation to the value of his rates would meet the situation.—Decided to reply that the council recognised no responsibility in the matter. Hinuera-Te Poi Road. In connection with the councils request for a supplementary loan for the Hinuera-Te Poi road the Local Government Loans Board wrote to the effect that the raising of the principal loan cannot be regarded as a step towards the raising of the supplementary loan for the purpose of section 14 of the Local Government Loan Boards Act 1926 and the consent of the board would be necessary before raising the proposed loan. The clerk (Mr. Barton) pointed out it would not be necessary to advertise the contention re the loan. It was decided to apply for the loan.
