HINUERA CLUB. 7— Official Opening Day. | . Pleasantly different from the weather of the previous Saturday, last I Saturday afternoon was just ideal for ■ the various sports bodies. The Humera' Tennis Club held its official opening at 1.30 o’clock, when there was a good muster considering the early hour, the function being performed by Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P. The. president, Mr. P. Corry, after | indulging in a little witty pleasantry l about long speeches, excused himself J from perpetrating that boredom. The club was to have opened its season I the week before but the abominable I weather caused a postponement. This had proved* to be a blessing in disguise, inasmuch as they now had the I honour of the ■ presence of Mr. and j Mrs. Hockly. i | Called upon to open the courts, Mr. ! 'Hockly, patron of the club, expressed Mrs. Ho.ckly’s and his own great pleasure at being present. Previously the courts had not been in his electorate, the railway line being the boundary between Rotorua and Waikato. He was pleased and surprised to note that Hinuera had such a good playing area. Country life, by reason of the forms of recreation that could now be indulged in, was much more agreeable than it used to he in the old days, when sports were looked upon as being rather frivolous. He was all in favour of the modern viewpoint that healthy recreation was all to the good. 'New Zealand had won a proud position in the realm ,of tennis, and the Davis Cup matches had put this Dominion prominently on the tennis map. We had Andrews (at Qxford), 'a New Zealander, doing welkin this ■field, and qearer home v is Dr. Laurenson, ex champion of New Zealand, who was still among the topnotchers. (Applause.) He wished the club a most successful season and hoped to be among them again on many future occasions. (Cheers.) Miss Florence Settle played the first ball over the net to the accompaniment of acclamation.
