LOAN WORK COMMENCED.
GOOD SHOWING MADE. The contractor for the first portion of the Putaruru loan works, Mr. W. S. Goosman, of Waitoa, commenced operations a few days ago, and has made good progress with the work, Mr. McCarthy being foreman of the job. A start with horse teams has been made on Scotia Glen road, which is to be raised several inches along its entire length, and the greater portion of this road has now been covered.
From an engineering point of view it has been found advisable to fill in the drain on the left-hand side of this road, along which the footpath will run, and a new drain will be dug close to the fence.
In Buckland road, a tractor, hauling a plough and scoop, has been employed, and on this rough thoroughfare good work has been done in the short time these implements have been in use.
Following Buckland road, the tractor will be used in Marchant, Margaret and McKenzie streets, and judging by the work done to date, a big showing will be made in a few weeks’ time.
Every effort is being made by the contractor to push ahead with his programme, and few restrictions are being placed on the men. An instance of this is the fact that one employee, who through no fault of bis own has been unemployed for some time, asked what the chances of overtime were. The answer was that practically no restrictions at all would be laid down. “ Get the work done and you’ll be paid for it,” was the effect of the reply, and in consequence it is on the cards that the machinery being used far breaking up the road surfaces will be working much longer hours than are generally understood to comprise a standard day.
