STOCK SALES.
MATAMATA. On Wednesday the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company held its fortnightly stock sale and first fat pig sale. There was a good attendance of buyers and brisk bidding eventuated. A good class of heavy and light pigs was yarded, -there being 325 fat pigs and 200 stores. There was little improvement in the prices for store pigs, buyers standing off. There was a good yarding of cattle and late rates were realised, while in the sheep section lambs sold well but there was little demand for other lines. Prices were as follow: Cattle. I ' —Light fat steers £8 5s ; heavy fat cows and heifers £8 2s to £8 17s 6d ; medium-weight cows £5 7s 6d to £6 9s ; light fat cows £4 6s ; light fat heifers £4 8s to £5 ; freshconditioned cows £3 10s to £4 ; store cows £2 to £3 2s ; potter bulls £3 10s to £4 15s. Sheep.—Small mixed sex woolly lambs 12s 9d ; shorn mixed sex lambs 14s ; small lambs 8s 9d ; sound-mouthed ewes 15s ; full-mouth ewes 12s 6d ; cull ewes 7s to 11s 9d. Pigs.—Baconers, heavy £3 5s to £3 12s 6d, medium £2 18s to £3 3s, light £2 12s to £2 15s ; porkers, heavy £2 5s to £2 l@s, light £1 16s to £2 Is, unfinished £1 7s to £1 14s, stores 17s 6d to 21s ; slips 12k to 15s ; best weaners 7s to 10s ; others 4s to 6s. FRANKTON. At the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company’s Frankton sale on Tuesday there was a good entry of fat cattle. Beef.—Heavy fat bullocks £ll 10s ; medium fat steers £9 15s ; light and unfinished steers £7 15s ; goodquality prime heavy cows £9 to £9 6s, medium prime £8 to £8 9s, lighter prime £6 to £6 15s ; plain and unfinished cows £4 12s to £5 10s ; freshconditioned cows £4 to £4 10s ; stores £2 4s to £3 5s ; dairy cows close to profit £8 to £lO.
Sheep.—Good-quality prime wethers to 27s 7d ; prime young ewes 23s ; black-faced lambs 24s 6d ; fair fat woolly lambs 20s 3d ; well-grown shorn store wether lambs 14s ; fourtooth and six-tooth and four-year and five-year ewes off hill country sold in a line realised 27s (equal ages). Pigs.—Heavy baconers £3 to £3 6s, medium £2 13s to £2 15s ; heavy porkers £2 to £2 6s, light 30s to 35s ; slips 14s to 17s 6d ; best weaners 9s to 12s ; others 5s to 6s. MORRINSVILLE. An average yarding of cattle and sheep and a large offering of pigs came forward at Dalgety and Company’s stock sale at Morrinsville on Thursday. Prices were firmer for beef, while a further rise in pigs was noticed. Buyers from Hamilton supplemented the large attendance of local farmers. Prices were:— Beef.—Aged fat cows £5 6s to £6 10s ; forward cows £3 5s to £4 7s 6d ; store cows £1 15s to £2 17s 6d ; cows and calves £5 5s ; Jersey-cross in-calf two-year heifers to £5 17s 6d ; Shorthorn heifer calves £1 17s ; Shorthorn steer calves £2 Is ; bulls for potting £3 10s to £4 ; dairy cows to £S. Sheep.—Mixed-age ewes 15s 5d : m.s. shorn lambs 14s 6d. Pigs.—Stores, light, 21s to 26s ; weaners from ss. WAIHOU. At the Waihou stock sale on Friday there was a noticeable all-round improvement. There was a good yarding of sheep composed of several small lines of two-tooth ewes, store lambs and a few fat ewes. Store lambs sold well but there were not many buyers seeking two-tooth ewes. Prices obtained were : Medium-quality fat ewes 15s 6d to 16s ; medium fat wethers 27s ; two-tooth ewes 27s ; store shorn lambs 11s to 12s 6d ; small lambs 6s 9d to 9s 7d ; cull ewes 7s to 11s.
Among the cattle there was a good yarding of beef, but not many stores. Beef was firm with prices well up to late rates. The run of prices ,-was as follows : Heavy fat cows £6 13s to £7 15s ; medium fat cows £5 11s to £6 ; light fat cows £4 12s 6d to £5 ; plain and unfinished £3 19s to £4 3s ; fresh-conditioned cows £3 to £3 15s ; store cows £1 10s to £2 10s.
There was a full yarding of fat and store pigs. Fats sold a lot better, while competition was extra keen for baconers. Stores were dull at late rates. The prices were : Heavy baconers £3 5s to £3 13s ; medium baconers £2 18s to £3 3s ; light baconers £2 10s to £2 15s ; hea\y porkers £2 2s to £2 8s ; light porkers £1 15s to £2 ; store pigs 17s 6d to 20s ; slips 11s to 14s ; best weaners 6s to 9s 6d ; small weaners 2s 6d to ss. . ..... ■ -
WAIKATO MARKET REPORT. 1 The Farmers’ Auctioneering Com-_ pany reports under date of February; 27: .
Beef.—The market is firm, with a slight rise in prices for both ox and cow beef, best prime ox making equal to 31s per 1001 b and cow and heifer 265. With exporters still operating prospects look good for autumn sales.
Fat Sheep.—Competition is keen for both wether and ewe mutton, with a tendency for prices to harden. Store Sheep.—There is still a good demand for breeding ewes, wethers and store lambs, at prices equal to the early fairs. Store Cattle.—Very few store cattle are coming on the market, but a good demand exists for grown and young steers, good young store cows and weaner Jersey heifers. Pigs.—Big yardings of both fats and stores are coming forward. Prices have improved considerably for baconers and porkers, but owing to the shortage of milk all classes of stores are low, especially weaners. Horses. Our autumn Cambridge fair will be held on March 7 and 8, but the market at present is very quiet. We quote:—
