A striking instance of a woman s self-denial and modesty in “ doing good by stealth ” is described in a letter from the house governor of the Middlesex Cancer Hospital (reports an exchange). A middle-aged woman called upon the secretary and left with him a small, old-fashioned cash box, with the bare intimation that she wished to help the good work of the hospital. She would give no name and would take no thanks or receipt. The box was found to eontain £9O in sovereigns and half-sovereigns, presumably her saving for over a long period. v -
