STATION STOCKYARDS.
A representative deputation of Putaruru district farmers met Messrs. W. T. Langbein (assistant district engineer) and J. G. Rickerby (traffic manager), of the Railways Department, last week with reference to the improvements required to the stockyards at the Putaruru station, full details of which have appeared in a recent issue of the Press. As an outcome of the meeting the present yards are to be improved at a cost estimated to be in the vicinity pf £IOO and put into a workable state pending the completion of the works at Arapuni. When these works are finished, and the Public Works Department has handed over the siding which it uses at present, and which has several buildings on it, the stockyards and shunting arrangements will be replanned and the whole yards brought up to modern requirements.
Advantage was also taken of the railway officials’ visit by the Town Board with reference to improvements to the railway entrance through the portion of the yard now leased to the Waotu Timber Company. The proposals put forward include the resumption of this area by the Department on the expiry of the lease, and the formation of a circular drive into the station which would be beautified in conjunction with the board’s scheme for Princes street. This proposal was also tentatively agreed upon, the officials suggesting that portion of the yard fronting tbe main street should be cleared, filled in, and then leased to the town board at a nominal rental so that it could be included in a comprehensive scheme to beautify the main street and station surroundings.
