Motorists coming through from the Paeroa boat in the small hours of Friday morning were surprised to find that the bridge over the Waihou river, a few miles on the south side of Te Aroha, had broken down. There was a gap of more than the length of a car at the Matamata end of the bridge, and the river bank below was broken for no little depth. Presumably a motor lorry or other heavy vehicle had gone through somewhere about midnight, for the driver of the car which first sighted the wreck said that the bridge was alright when he had passed over a few hours before.
