TIRAU SPORTS.
ENJOYABLE DAY. The fourth annual Tirau sports meeting held on behalf of the funds of the Tirau Domain Board eventuated last Thursday. The meeting suffered through the postponement from the previous week and the attendance was not up to expectations. Apart from this the meeting was most enjoyable, the equestrian events being especially entertaining. The officials worked well throughout the day and had the programme carried out well to time. The club is indebted to the secretary, Mr. L. W. Bishop, for his energy in connection with the meeting, and also to the chairman of the Domain Board, Mr. G. W. Seaton, who was in charge of the horse events. The handicappers, Messrs. J. W. Anderson and A. Stewart, fulfilled their duties in such a thorough manner as to leave the issues in doubt until the tape was i reached.
The judges were : Running : Messrs. R. Carruth and M. Harrison. Horse events: Major Wilding. A feature of the meeting was the match between Mr. J. W. Anderson, an old-time champion, now 54 years of age, and Mr. A. Hampson, who stood his opponent up a yard for a year, 27 yards. The “ old horse ” had the lead until the last 10 yards, when Hampson got on terms. The latter here stumbled and the favourite got home amidst great enthusiasm. The results were:— CHILDREN’S EVENTS.
