THE PUTARURU GATHERING.

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The Putaruru Athletic Club’s seventh annual sports meeting at Dowd’s ground, Putaruru, was the Easter Monday attraction for the countryside for 15 to 20 miles around. The weather was ideal, it being a fine, still day. The atmosphere was warm, but not uncomfortably so, and the attendance numbered Somewhere about 500 persons. Some close finishes were witnessed in the various races, particularly the Putaruru Cup of 120yds, in the final for which the finish was well bunched.

The officials who carried out the programme were as follow:—Messrs. J. Barr Brown, club chairman; H. L. Martin, secretary; J. Martin, M. Henderson and G. E. Martin, local handicappers; C. H. Woodgate and G. W. Brown, judges; and W. Rodgers, starter. The results of the various events were as follow: Maiden Handicap, 100yds (First prize £l, second 10s). —H. Barnett 1, W. Jensen 2. Single Ladies’ Race, 75yds handicap (Trophy prizes).—Miss Oates 1, Miss F. Martin 2. Ladies’ Nail-driving Competition (First £l, second ss, cash donated by Mr. C. H. Woodgate).—Miss Young 1, Mrs. Nicholson 2. A programme of music was played during the afternoon by the Putaruru

Brass Band and was much enjoyed. A refreshment booth on the grounds catered for the requirements of the inner man. During the afternoon and in the presence of the assembled gathering, the patron, Mr. A. G. Leggatt, on behalf of the club presented to Mr. Dowd a gold button as a token of Mr. Dowd’s election as a life member of the club in recognition of his generosity in giving the use of his grounds for the sports each year. At the call of the patron three cheers were given for Mr. Dowd and “ For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow ” was sung. Mr. Dowd suitably replied. , , THE ANNUAL SOCIAL. In accordance with the usual custom, the prizes won at the sports were presented to the winners by the chairman at the club’s annual social in the Town Hall in the evening. The attendance there was also large, dancing being the major attraction. Mrs. Aspden (piano) and Mr. R. Sayers (violin) provided the music, while Messrs. M. Cooper and C. D. Brown acted as the M.’sC. Altogether the social provided an appropriate ending to a happy holiday.
