THE SELWYN CLUB.

GOOD DAY’S SPORT. Championship Chops. The Selwyn Athletic Club is as yet quite a new club, having been formed only some three years ago, but already its annual sports gala is well to the fore among those in the Waikato, and, in fact, throughout the Auckland province, for the enthusiasm and generosity of members the capable \\-ork of the officers have resulted in the club being able to give both competitors and spectators a very enjoyable and satisfactory day’s sport each year. Thus, it was that, the weather being fine, Mangatapu was the mecca of a large concourse of holiday-mak-ers on Thursday last* that being the place and date of the club’s third annual sports. In all some £260 was available in prize money, including £IOO foi the 15-inch standing chop, and this, together with the very satisfactory conduct of the previous sports, resulted in a large total in entries, while as an added distinction and a recognition of which the club has just reason to be proud, the Northern Athletic Union had allotted to it the Auckland Provincial Championship Chop, 18-inch blocks. In this and the 15-inch standing chop the foremost axemen of the Dominion competed. Owing to the arrival of the train from Frankton being almost an hour late, the sports were also somewhat late in starting, but with the complete arrangements that had been made beforehand the various events followed one another in good succession, keeping the several hundred spectators excitedly interested throughout, and completing the programme in good time. There was one exception, the “Selwyn Handicap, which was deferred, but which, being confined to residents of Mangatapu, can be conveniently held any time after the holidays.

Sideshows, a refreshment booth, booth, etc., were added attractions, but it was in the sports that the main interest lay. Particularly creditable Were the elabprte and commodious accommodation for both the chopping and the running events, and the way in which the secretarial duties were carried out.
