THE MATAMATA POUND.
DISCUSSION BY COUNTY COUNCIL. Member Suggests No Liability. At the Matamata County Council meeting on Friday an account was re- , ceived from the Matamata Town Board for approximately- £BO for disbursements in feed and attention to stock impounded in the Matamata pound from the county. The clerk asked whether the Council wished to pay the amount; it could not be leg-ally compelled to do so. The amount covered about three years. The chairman: We are morally liable for some of the expenses of the pound, and 1. think we should pay it. J The Town Board was making- extensive losses on the pound. [ Cr. Pohlen said he could not sec that the county ratepayers should pay for the losses on the town pound. He knew of one poundkeeper who fed stock on the packing out of cases at the back of shops anil charged schedule rates. Cr. Judd thought the account should be paid, but that further liability should be disclaimed. If the Town Board shut its pound then the county would use its own pound at Tirau. The chairman: You would ask the 1 own Board to stand losses on county stock ? . Cr. Judd: Yes. Cr. Cox: If we -use the pound we should pay. Cr. Darby: The worst feature is that the account is belated. j Cr. Stop ford: It has been comingin periodically, but has been shelved. Cr. Judd: I still think we should
disclaim any further liability. We’ll be getting a bill from the Cambridge Borough Council next. The chairman: Oh, no, wc will not. We subsidise the Cambridge pound. It was decided to pay the account.
