FOOTBALL.
UNION COMMITTEE. A meeting of the management committee of the Putaruru Rugby Union was held on Monday evening, the chairman, Mr. J. Barr Brown, presiding over an attendance -of six members. It was decided to write the secretary of the Rotorua Union inquiring what progress had been made towards forming the proposed Gyerland sub-provincial union. On behalf of the Rover players of last season, Mr. G. L. Martin announced that they wished to forego the caps due to them as winners of the season’s competition, the amountl thus saved, about £lo* to be devoted* to the insurance fund. The offer to forego the caps on these terms was accepted. It was agreed that the presentation social, early in April, should take the form of, say, a concert and dance, and Messrs. Ashford and Barr Brown were deputed to arrange a programme for the occasion, the programme to be submitted to next week’s meeting of the union. Messrs. Ashford and Barr Brown were also appointed to attend the annual meeting of the Patetere club, Tirau, this evening (Thursday), the club having invited the union to send a representative in view of the discussion on the question as to whether it should join the Matamata or Putaruru union this year. The question of fixing the opening date for the forthcoming season’s competition was discussed, but it was agreed that it would be advisable to delay decision until a fuller meeting. On behalf of the Tokoroa club, Mr. Dunlop inquired whether or not the committee could give the clubs a percentage of the gate takings in the inter-club matches. The chairman replied that it was the invariable rule for the union to take all such receipts. Mr. Ashford offered a guinea for the team scoring the most points on the opening day, and the offer was accepted with thanks. Mr. Byers resigned the secretaryship of the union, and Mr. Ashford was appointed secretary pro tern. THE UNITED CLUB. The annual meeting of the United Football Club was held last week. There was an attendance of about 13 members, over whom Mr. C. D. Brown presided. It was reported that the prospects of the club for the coming season seemed good, and the following officers were elected: President, Mr. H. Robinson; vice-presidents, Messrs. J. C. Tomalin, W. J. Lilly, A. V. Morris and A. Snell; secretary, Mr. C. D. Brown; assistant secretary, Mr. G. Hill; appointed on management committee of union, Mr. G. E. Martin; deputy appointee and delegate to union, Mr. J. Smith. It was resolved that the colours of the club, etc., be the same as last year. Messrs. Berquest and Hill were appointed to interview prospective selectors for the ciud.
It was resolved to challenge the Rovers’ Club to a practice match on March 29. The annual meeting of the Tokoroa Club was held some time ago, when the following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr. J. B. Campbell; president, Mr. J. Campbell; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. S. Keen, A. Mitchell and E. J. McHale; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. R. Cocks; committee, Messrs. L. Hamilton (chairman), L. McHale, L. Newell, A. Sloper, A. Forbes and J. Harrington. The club’s membership stands at about 30, and its prospects of putting a strong team into the field the forthcoming season seem good.
