hut may subscribe whatever sum they please. Adelaide wheat, ex store, is quoted at 86s, and New Zealand at 28s to 83s. Adelaide dour, ex store, 245. The total quantity of wheat afloat for the United Kingdom, according |to to day's returns, is 1,060,000 | quarters, or 20,000 less than last 1 week. Australian tallow remains at the following quotations for average qualities :—Beef, 23s ; mutton, 26s o*l The total stock of tallow in London to-day is 15,600 casks. New Zealand frozen mutton, prime quality, is selling at 4d to 4jd per lb. The third of the year's series of wool auctions close to-day, the tone of the market being weak. During the past series *2(50,000 bales have been disposed of, and 5000 are held over for next auctions. The fourth series will open on the 28rd November. October 2. The wool sales have closed, and quotations are easier on all merinos except on superior combing, which are a penny lower, but equal to last closing rates. Crossbreds are firmer, and show an advance of a penny on closing rates. The number of bales catalogued was 270,000, of which 5000 were withdrawn. The English harvest is almost completed. The wheat market is weak, and common sorts are 6d cheaper. Australian and New Zealand shipments are depressed. October 8. Fourteen rebels in Madrid have been sentenced to death. Merchants in Moscow are complaining of the stagnation of trade, and it is thought foresee war. In a native quarrel in the Godavery District in Hmdostan, a hundred Datives were killed. An exhibition has been arranged to be held at Messrs Ransome and Co.’s Works, Chelsea, for tho purpose of testing the qualities of colonial timber and the uses to which it might be applied. Mr Stanhope will be present, and a large number of engineers and timber merchants are expected to attend.
