Our Steam Traffic.

In these days of rapid transition and 1 journeys from one place to the other, we become so use ito the easy method of travelling that we often overlook the means which enables us to visit any part of the Colony, or even Australia, and return in a given time with such certainty from danger or delays, or when we contrast the present with , the past one can hardly believe so much has been accomplished in such a short period of time. Ah old resident of this district once made a trip from Nelson to Wellington in the old Government brig which occupied twenty-one—yes, twenty-one days—just half the time it takes in these • progressive times to visit London, and' all through the wonderful effects of steam-power, if there, is one thing more than another the Colony can be proud of, it is the magnificent fleet of steamers placed on our coast by the enterprising Union Steam Shipping Company. Few, if any, other colonies can boast of such a high class of vessels, and they deserve great credit for their push and energy in keeping, not only pace, but even m advance of the times, and there can be no doubt the patronage is widely extended by their judicious selection of:local managers.
