Tree-Planting.

Arbour Day, as it has been named, is now attracting some attention in the Colony, and will thus give an incentive to tree-planting on lands which have no bush in the vicinity, or have been denuded by the rapid march of settlement, and we think the local authorities in many parts of New, Zealand will neyer regret the time employed in such'judicious work, but it will be remembered that some years ago the Government; \ passed | regulations on Counmfr^vitfg“stflnamf acre* of land' or. so much cash in proportion to the outlay to any settler who would plant certain forest trees in accordance with the stipulation gazetted in ; many instances this was done, and among the gentlemen who carried out the pro-; visions was Mr Thomas Carter, of the Wairau Valley, who, from our own knowledge, has not only planted a very large acreage, but continues doing so, and it appears that during his absence on a trip to England, the proper application for this bonus was not made in time, which has prevented the money being paid over, and thus some informality occurred. to meet the applicant in a liberal rather than a strict judicial spirit, and thus encouroge what, viewed from either aspect, must ultimately prove a lasting benefit to posterity.
