Education.
“Knowledge is power,” says good authority, and we see the true wisdom of this exemplified more and more every day by the far-reaohing effects of Education, which can be traced from its infancy, not only in mental, but in physical culture throughout the world, and the day is rapidly approaching when every child that is born in the Colony will have received a reasonable share of this .invaluable gift; but we are of opinion that great improvements are yet attainable in our national system, and we would suggest somewhat less of standard cramming, with more time devoted to agricultural chemistry, and practical gardening, so that a child would carry away from school the first, germs for profitably tilling the land and becoming a wealthy farmer, in' preference to only looking forward to occupy a clerical position, or an uncertain billet in the Civil Service. Among those of our leading men who always upheld giving every facility for Education in outlying districts is Thomas Carter, Esq., the popular run-holder, who, many years ago, in the old provincial days, proposed that a sum should be set apart for establishing a boarding school in a central position where children of poor parents could be educated at a very small expense; Since then our free system of eddcatidh has'been inaugurated, and therefore would only necessitate- -a boarding-house, but the same gentleman has still the primary object in view, and now, if the Government hand over to him the amount due for forest-planting on his estate—something ’ over £so§—he, generously i intends to invest it in trustees under the Board of Education as the-nucleus for such a fund, which will no doubt hereafter prove of great advantage to many, who will, reap a benefit from it and induce other wealthy men to follow such a hoble example; !
