Local Industries.
In these days of everlasting taxation it is quite exhilarating to visit a manufactory of any kind, and see what the combined efforts of skill and machinery can accomplish in a short time, at prices to meet the times, and in the rising township of Blenheim are to be found some of this class, who can. hold their own with others in the same trade, who make very much greater pretention in larger communities, Among the conspicuous ones we have Joseph Scott & Co., with their steam biscuit and confectionery works, which has been established since 1870. The principal building is 80ft long by 40ft wide, conveniently sub-divided to meet the requirements of the business, and requisite space for the machinery. In making confectionery, the sugar is first ground to very fine powder, then passed through mixing, rolling, am) printing machines, in such a simple manner that we no longer wonder how it id done, while the process of making fancy cakes or water biscuits is just as interesting to the novice, and only makps ones mouth water to look on. We are glad to hear thejr trade extends
as far as Auckland. Another local industry which deserves patronage, and is steadily growing into favour is the iron foundry of Mr Thomas Powick, very few people are aware that castings up to scwt can be successfully turned out in the neighbourhood, while for finish and workmanship they leave nothing to be desired, and we have much pleasure in calling attention to the advertisements from both firms, which appear in another column.
