THE PELORUS GUARDIAN FRIDAY, JULY 4, 1890.
Eddleston, charged at Blenheim with horse-stealing, has been committed for trial. We have been requested by a correspondent to call attention to those who have the looking after the Wairau Fords that the flags have disappeared. Our correspondent says that he had great difficulty in finding his way across in the daylight. Mr W. A. Collins has forwarded a cheque for £BO to the Chairman of the Pioton Hospital, as a first instalment of the proceeds of the concert and ball held at Cullensville for the benefit of that institution. We are glad to see that Mr C. H. Mills was successful at Board meeting on Tuesday in carrying his resolution for the dismissal of Mr J. T. Robinson, Secretary of the Education Board, and for applications to be invited for the combined office of Inspector and Secretary. The returns for 1889 give the total number of sheep in the United Kingdom as 29,484,774. The New Zealand returns, made up to May of last year, give the total number in the Colony as 15,423,328. At the Wellington Bankruptcy Court, His Honour the Chief Justice refused to grant the discharge of Hyam Hyams until he had considered the matter, as it was thought he should try and pay something off his debts. It will be remembered that this is the man who was sued for breach of promise, and a Miss Mills obtained £l5O damages. In a libel action against the Wairarapa Daily the plaintiff was awarded a farthing damages. Nearly every week some newspaper is being served with a writ for libel on the slightest provocation. We think it is nearly time there was a little protection afforded to newspapers in cases where trumpery charges are preferred, just because someone happens to be a little too thin-skinned to stand a little comment on his public actions. The book-debts in a bankrupt’s estate, valued at £2,525, were sold by auction the other day at Gisborne, and realised £2 10s. We direct special attention to Mr S. J. Macalister’s sale of section 198 with dwelling house thereon, situated in the town of Havelock. The sale will take place on the 14th instant, and very probably other lines will be offered on the same day, of which notice will be given.
