Francisfyesterday was inadvertently inserted “ J.” Our readers are reminded of Mr. W. Edward’s benefit conceit on Mondaynight, Mails for Napier and Wellington, per Thomas Russell, will close to-night at 7 p.m. The Thomas Russell will not probably leave for Napier until to-morrow afternoon. At Tattersail’s this morning fifteen horses were put up for public auction, but only five were sold, brii ging low prices. From some unexplained cause our supplements have not come to hand. We must therefore ask the indulgence of our readers.
The R.M. Court, has resumed its usual garb, the furnishing borowed for the makeshift Surpreme Court having been returned this morning. The goodwill of the lease of section 92. Gladstone Road, was put up for sale to-day, but as the highest bid only amounted to it was passed in. The annual picnic in connection with the Matawhero school is announced to be held at Beresford’s grounds. Full particulars on Monday.
Owing to the operations about to be commenced in the erection of the Turanganui bridge, the feny has been shifted just this side of Common, Shelton & Co’s old store.
An application in W. Knight’s bankrupt estate was put in yesterday by the Assignee for his Honor’s direction. Mr. McDoU/a’l for Mr. H. T. U’Ren, said they had been served with a notice to appear last night ai 4 o’clock, and therefore that time was insufficient. His Honor did not consider, if the application was made under the 69th section of the Act, that sufficient notice had been given. It was therefore struck out without costs. Under the instructions of the Registrar of the Supreme Court, Messrs Graham, Pitt & Bennett this afternoon ofiered for sale part of the Mangamoteo Bieck, containing 55 acres, near Roseland ; also sections 39, 41, 45, 48, and 49, and parts of sections I, 3, and 4 of the township of Roseland ; also portion of allotment No. 2 of that township. The lot was disposed of for to Mr. J. Tutchen.
Mr. S. Locke-addressed a large number of the electors at Bruces’s Hall, Ormond, last night, and was veiy well received. During the address he touched on subjects similar to those he spoke on in Gisborne, after which Mr. Currie proposed, and Mr O. Dwyer seconded, a motion to the effect that that meeting had every confidence, in Mr. Locke, and re turned its hearty thanks to him for whai he had already done for them. Mr. Skillicorn occupied the chair. Messrs Cresswell, Mouatt, Day, and Chrisp were admitted as barristers anc solicitors to the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon, by his Honor, Mr. Justice Gillies, in Chambers. Owing to certain rumours respecting the examination his Honor questioned each gentleman as tc the truth, of those rumors, which the) denied Z/z toto. His Honor stated that he regretted to hear of the illness of Mr. C C. Ward,, who was thereby debarred fron then applying for admittance, but statec that thatgentl.eman could make his application at a future sitting. This evening at Mr. Scott’s Masonic Hotel at 8 o’clock, the sheep taken from Mr. Barker’s flock from Whataupoko, and killed on lhe 26’h of November, wil be served up for dinner, when a numbe’ of gentlemen interested in Bennett’*process of preserving meat will have ar> opportunity of putting the discovery to the test. The weather for the past fortnight has been so sultry that no one can say the process has not lyecn fairly tried. The carcass haS been hanging at th hotel since it was killed, and the Result .0 . this evening will be watched with muci interest by stock raisers in the district. Captain Andrews has kindly handei., us the following A buoy, painted red. has. been placed in three fathoms o; water on the western- - side of Waikari; river, with the following magnetic bear ingsj—Outer end of wharf at Opua (Waimangaroa) Point, S.E. by E. % E., distant 2j4 cables ; and Tapu Point, N.E. by E. X ii., distant 2% cables. Tbe Bluff Harbor Board have given notice that, on and after the Ist January, 1885, there will be exhibited at Bluff Harbor a leading-light on each of the two dolphins erected on the Middle, Bank, and now used as leading marks by day. Th eastern, or outer one, wiil be a fixed red light, and the western, or inner one, a fixed green light. These lights are to be brought in line when abreast the Perch Buoy, off Te Waewae Point, and so maintained until the two red lights on main wharf are brought in line, when the course may be altered either direct to the wharf or an anchorage off it. The above lights have been erected for the purpose of enabling vessels to enter the harbor al night, and lead through the worst part of the entrance channel, that is, from abreast the Perch Buoy to a cable’s length above the lightship. Their line will give, between the points named, from 30 feet to 33 feet at low water. They are not intended to be used for any other part of the harbour or entrance.
