[Per United Press Association.] Christchurch, December 13. Mr. Whiteford, R.M., was thrown out of a buggy on Thursday, but was not seriously’ i njured. Mrs Whiteford, who was also thrown out, remained unconscious till noon yesterday. Timaru, December 13. In the Supreme Court yesterday, Joseph Dyer received three months for larceny of a cheque. Sentenced had been reserved pending the Judge’s decision as to whether the cheque was a valuable security. His Honor 11 Id that although not provided for at the Bank the cheque was a valuable security in a civil action. Kett v. Godby, claim /555 for ball and supper in celebratien of the coming of age at Timarn of Rhodes. Defendant paid into Court being at the rate of £\ per head, and declined to pay the remainder unless furnished with the items. This plaintiff refused on the
ground that it was not a custom of trade. Finally defendant having inspected the memorandum of particulars, which was drawn up on guidance agreed to pay the balance of LlB5, L5O costs. In the case of McLean and Stewart v. Wcllwood, claim of LlB5, Judgment was given .for plaintiff with costs. WestporU, December 13. The collier's of the Westport C.dal Co. have struck because the company refuse to pay for unscreened coal. ' z Oamaru, December 18. At-a.meeting of the Licensing Committee yesterday an extension of hours to 11 o’clock was granted to all publicans. Duneein, December 13. James Fulton JEsq., M.H.R., has returned to the Treasury the £lOO voted him last session,- as Chairman of the Waste Lands Committee. A complaint signed by 35 passengers of the steamer Kaikoura, against the behaviour and manner of Captain Crutchley has been forwarded to the Directors of the N. 2. Shipping Co.
Invercargill, December 13. The second day of the Agricultural' Show yesterday was very successful. The weather was the finest experienced this summer. In the Supreme Court yesterday the jury in the second trial of John Meekle, charged with perjury, having been discharged through not being able to agree, the Crown Prosecutor stated he would probably ask fora change of venue. Mr. J ustice Williams doubted if the applicarion could be entertained, accused having been called on to plead.
