The Telephone. WITH WHICH INCORPORATRD THE POVERTY BAY STANDARD. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. GISBORNE, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 13.
The gratifying intelligence was received this morning by Mr. Warren, Secretary to the Cook County Council, that the suni of sanctioned by Parliament for expenditure on the GisborneWairoa Road between the Waihau Lakes and Te Reinga Falls was now available., .This is the final portion of the Gisborne-Wairoa Road under the supervision of the Cook County Council, and when it is completed : and a few repairs made along, the present road, an excellent buggy track will exist between Gisborne and Wairoa, and for this-time of the year persons of robust constitution would find a trip to the Falls by no means an unpleasant excursion. Intimation has too been received that the £2,000 for the Waimata Road is also available. Capt Winter, the County Engineer will set about at once having the necessary plans and specifications prepared so as to have tenders out for the work immediately. These grants are made for the purpose of opening up Crown lands for settlement. The GisborneWairoa Road passes through a very large area of Government land and the Waimata Road is expected to come out on the coast, somewhere about Mr. Seymour’s station at Whangara and will open up the Waimata, Arakihi and other back blocks, and facilitate the settlement of that part of the County. With reference to the Wairoa-Mahia Road, the Wairoa Count}' Council has lost no time in comihimicating.with the Cook County Council stating its readiness to' put in order that part of the Wairoa-Mahia road, South of Paritu, being the portion in the Wairoa County, the Cook County Council to exercise corresponding care over the Northern portion of the road. There are many persons kept idle, who would
witfingly avail themselves nf taking coif-tracts for these road works. The Goitvity Council should authorize the Oouftit.y Engineer to temporarily employ professional assistance, .in order to have' tenders called a} ihe earliest possible opportunity. ■ The County Engineei’' cannot be- übiquitious, nor shoujd he be expected to emulate Sir Boyle Roach's bird, that had, it isea-id the.happy knack of being in two places at the one time. While the present precs of work is imposed on the County Council, the course we suggest would in our opinion be genuine economy, as tire road work can be done better now than if allowed to remain over until the depth of whiter.
