Auckland News.
[Own Correspondent.] Auckland, December 6. Edwart Dimant was committed for trial yesterday for stabbing Francis Durant, a French seaman. Bishop Selwyn arrived yesterday in the Southern Cross, missionary schooner, from Norfolk Island. The funeral of Mr. H. Swainson, first Attorney-General of New Zealand, took place on Thursday. Amongst the mourners were Sir George Grey, Sir F. Whitaker, Sir M. O’Rorke, Mr. Tole, Dr. Pollen, and Dr. Shortland. John Taylor, formerly a farmer at Turakina, attempted suicide last night by taking laudanum owing to depression of spirits. He is now recovering. A deputation, which included Messrs. Mitchelson and Buckland, M.H.R’s., waited on the Minister of Justice yesterday, urging the inclusion of Kawhia in the district over which drink was prohibited. The Minister said it was his impression that Kawhia was included, but he would telegraph to the Native Minister for information.
