Wellington News. [Own Correspondent.] Wellington, December 6. The regulations for the election of a Board for the Government Insirance Association were passed by the Exton ave Council yesterday and forwarded to Christchurch for the Governor’s signature. It is probable that the nominatian day will be fixed for an earlier date than December 20, and the elections take place the first week in January. A cablegram has been received from the Agent-General stating that post office notices have been issued announcing the alternate fortnightly mail by the direct steamers, and that no further matter will be sent via Brindisi, unless so superscribed. Henry Lewis* who has officiated as hangman, was charged yesterday with breaking into the Brunner Coal Mining Co’s. Offices, and was remanded till Monday. Government received yesterday the following cablegram from Sydney :—“ Small pox is confined to one district in the city. No 'known oases are at large, but fourteen cases are in the small-pox hospital, viz., four oases of confluent, four semi-confluent, three discrete, and three convalescent. A strict house to house investigation has been instituted in the affected locality by the Medical officer.” Government have affected a satisfactory arrangements with New South Wales respecting the Frisco’ Mail Service. Altogether, including what they received from the other Colonies, it will be a net gain to New Zealand of £9,000 yearly.
