[Own Correspondent.] Napier, December 2. Judge Gillies gave an important decision on Saturday in the Superior Court in Bankruptcy. A bankrupt named Adam Smith was owing to Margoliouth, the auctioneer, a few pounds, and sent to Margoliouth’s auction room three half-chests of tea out of the proceeds of which Margoliouth was to pay himself. His Honor held that as the transaction occurred within three months of Smith’s bankruptcy it was void as against the Assignee, and Margoliouth must repay the amount. The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court opened yesterday morning. Judge Gillies, in his charge, referred to the length of the calendar, and to the serious nature of some of the charges, comprising intent to murder, perjury, forgery, arson, horsestealing, and others of a minor character.
Alfred Lebst was convicted of stealing moneys from Beck & Co’s, store, Hastings. He got twelve months. Edward Perry, for stealing jewellery from the Ferry Hotel, Wairoa, twelve months. Michael O'Connor, larceny, three months, Daniel Flanagan pleaded guilty to attempting suicide and was discharged on his own recognisance to come up for sentence when called upon. John Thompson, forging and uttering a cheque upon the Bank of New South Wales, nine months, John Patrick Ward, charged with forging Harker’s name to guarantee, was acquitted. In the cases against John Finn, arson, and Jean Sollor, house-breaking, at Wairoa, no true bills were found. In consequence, of the nature of Dr. Grabham’s report respecting the Hospital staff, Dr. Fisher has resigned his appointment of Surgeon Superintendent, and Miss Scullion, nurse, has received notice of dismissal. The Committee have been requested by Government to recommend a suoofflsor to Dr, Fisher and in the meantime provide for medical attendance at the hospital. At a meeting last evming of the shareholders in the new evenng newspaper company, the following permanent directors were elected H. Williams W. C. Smith, J. H. Vautier, W. Villers, f. Peddie, P. Gillespie, and John Sheehan. It is expected the paper will make a start in January,
