The annual fete in aid of the Hospita l funds was held yesterday at Makaraka or Beresford’s new ground. The attendance was very small and as to the sports themselves we leave those who saw them to be the judges. The entries were tolerably numerous. As is usual with charitable affairs in Poverty Bay none of the usual courtesies were ac corded to the Press. The programme commenced with the

George .. .. 2 The next item on the ‘programme was lunch, but as the Press were refused admit, tance except on production of the ordinary fee the proceedings are not reported. 9. Handicap Walking Match, one mile. Entrance, 2s. 6d. Ist prize, 8 day striking clock, value £3, presented by Good Bros.; 2nd, dressed lamb, presented by Thelwall and Co. ; 3rd, new bridle presented by S. Stevenson.

There were seven names on the card, but only four came to the post:—viz., J. McFarlane, scratch; G. F. Henderson, 35 yards; A. Y. Ross, 40 yards; F. Hooper, 65 yards. Henderson gave up about half way round the course under the impression that the distance had been completed. He was leading at the time and had every prospect of winning. Hooper showed by far the prettiest style and maintained his lead until near the finish, when McFarlane overhauled him and won the stakes. Ross entered a protest on the ground of unfair walking, but it was not entertained. 10. Obstacle Race, 440 yds. Entrance, 2s. 6d. Ist prize, —; 2nd, —. In this event J. Adean came in first and J. This match came off on Saturday in Mr. Muldoon’s paddock at Matawhero. There was a fair number of spectators present to witness the match, including a fair sprinkling of the gentle sex. A very good luncheon was provided under the able superintendence of Mesdames Stevenson and Wright, Messrs. G. Johnstone and F. J. Thompson acted as umpires. The match was a good and pretty close cne, the Hapara proving by sixteen runs. The batting and bowling of Mr. W. 1. Rees for the Hapara, and the bating and fielding of Mr. J. White, and bowling of Mr. T. E. R. Bloomfield was very good and much admired. The Hapara won the toss md went to the wickets first. Appended are the scores ;—
