House of Representatives.

Replies to Questions. In the House yesterday, replying to questions, it was stated Government would not take steps to set aside the sale to the Westport Colliery Company of 150 acres at Wallsend, Grey River District. That Government could not consent to pay salaries to Clerks of Licensing Committees, the fees being vested in local bodies. The Premier stated that the Annexation and Federation question would be discussed on Tuesday. Wahanui at the Bar, On the motion of the Premier it was resolved that the House sit at 11 o’clock on the following morning, when Wahanui will be heard at the bar of the House on the Native Land Settlement Bill. Third Readings. The Beet Root Sugar Bill was read a third time and passed. The Westland Education District Subdivision Bill was read a third time by 35 to 24. First Readings. The Property Tax Bill and the New Zealand Loan Bill were read a first time. Second Readings. Sir Julius Vogel moved the second reading of the Consolidated Stock Bill. Major Atkinson characterised the proposal as an immoral one, by which the colony was to borrow more money to pay its debts. The colony had already pushed its credit as far as was prudent and they were now going to proclaim from the highest official authority that they could no longer continue to pay a quarter of a million per annum towards the liquidation of the colony’s debt. He moved that the Bill be read that day six months. Messrs Brown and Montgomery said as the question was one of no-confidence he would not vote against the second reading. The House divided, and the second reading was carried by 58 to 15. Progress Reported. The Timber Floating Bill and the Impounding Bill were passed through committee with amendments. Progress was reported on the River Boards Bill. The House adjourned at 1.15 a.m.
