Murderous Assaults.
[Own Correspondent.] Christchurch, October 27. In the Magistrate’s Court on Friday, P. McCarthy, seaman of the American barque H. J. Libby, was charged with stabbing Capt. Richardson, on the vovage from New York, and ordered to be detained until the American Consul had arranged for his removal for trial within the jurisdiction of the United States. Captain Richardson was then charged with inflicting bodily harm on McCarthy with intent to kill him. McCarthy deposed to the illusage he had received, and alleged that he stabbed the Captain in self-defence. The Bench decided they had no jurisdiction, and dismissed the case, declining to make an order for the detention of the Captain, but promising they would communicate with the Governor respecting sending the witness to America.
