THE LASTINGHAM. GEORGE LONGHURST. NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION. MORE ILLEGAL ELECTIONS. [Per Association Telegrams.] Wellington, September 17. Telegrams received to-day give a most favorable report of the position of the wreck, and the prospects of a large quantity of salvage being obtained. Captain Cooper, one of the purchasers of the Lastingham, reports that the vessel is still in the same position. Her bow is about 8 feet and stern 16 feet underwater. He also found that the hatches were forced up, but does not think that a great quantity of her caigo has floated out, and that only the light portion on the top came through the hatches and holes made by the masts going overboard.
A meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association, to consider a proposal to hold the next meeting here, was cal'ed for last night, but fell through owing to none of the Executive Council being present. A petition from Geoige Longhurst is being considered by the Public Petitions Committee. The Rev. Mr. Still, at present holding a living in England, has been appointed to succeed the Rev. Mr. Thorpe, as incumbent of St. Paul’s. Dunedin, September 17. The publicans of South Dunedin were today refused an extension of hours from 10 to 11 o’clock. Napier, September 17.
A question has been raised as to the legality of the last Municipal election, owing to the Borough Returning officer having appointed a deputy for one of the wards, and owing to one place in the central ward having been the place to receive nominations for candidates for all three wards, and to the declaration of the polls having been made from the Town Clerk’s office, instead of at a duly appointed place in each ward.
