[Per Press Association] . MERCURY BAY TIMBER CO. NEW BOATS FOR THE UNION CO. Auckland, September 2. Complaints are made that the provision of the Act for the protection of fish and fisheries are systematically violated by fishermen, fish being taken under size though prohibited by the Act. The appointment of an inspector of fisheries is suggested. None of the insurance companies tendered for the insurance of the corporation property save the National.
A handsomely-illuminated address has been presented to Mr. G. Von Der Hyde on his retirement from the presidency of the Auckland Deutsche Verein.
Michael Haydon, the subject of the rough on rats attempted poisoning case, was discharged to-day, as, owing to Judge Gillies’ previous utterances on the subject of attempted suicide, Haydon’s committal for trial would only have put the country to useless expense. At the half-yearly meeting of the Mercury Bay Timber Company, an interim dividend of 5 per cent, was declared. A balance of £11,460 was carried forward. The Irene has cleared for New York with a cargo of kauri gum, valued at £24,000. Christchurch, September 2. The twenty-fifth annual meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce was held on Saturday. Mr. J. Cooke was elected president and the Hon. J. T. Peacock vicepresident of the chamber, which has now 116 members; seven more were added to-day. Assets, £2246; liabilities, £331. At the Belfast Freezing Works during the past fortnight 7500 frozen sheep were sent to load the lonic and Tongariro ; 4000 more were being prepared for the Florida next week, after which 7000 were to be prepared for the Aorangi.
Napier, September 2. Mr. Tanner has received a report from English experts on the hops grown at Riverslea. The report is highly favorable. Dunedin, September 2. A requisition is being got up in the Roslyn district to ask Mr. Ross to resign. The Union Company have three new steamers coming out before the end of the year. The Ohau and Taupo are for the cargo trade. The Ohau will carry refrigerating machinery. The third steamer is the Tekapo, 2,350 tons. She will be employed in the Sydney service. In addition to these, two more are being built by Messrs. Denny Bros, for them for the ordinary intercolonial service, and will be the largest of the Company’s fleet, being 320 feet in length. She will steam IG4 knots. The other is a cargo boat of 3,000 tons.
The Agent-General and Dr. McDonald, of Glasgow, has been asked to select an English master for the Boy’s High School. An application was made to - day in Chambers, asking Judge Williams to adjourn the important cases, Campbell v. Kennedy and others, in which Mr. Stout is a necessary witness, on the ground that he is detained in Wellington. After argument the trial was set down for October Ist, when if Mr. Stout is still unable to leave Wellington, he will be examined before the Registrar.
