Local and General.
Organ Recital.—We understand Mr. Flood has another organ recital in preparation. R.M. Court.—A clean sheet was presented to his Worship this morning. Dance.—The Excelsior Club had a very good dance last evening in the old Volunteer Hall, about thirty couples being present. The Waihora.—The Waihora leaves for South on Saturday. not Sunday as stated in our local in last night’s issue. Fire Brigade.—The members of the Brigade met in their reading room last night. Conference.—A meeting to discuss matters in connection with the recent conference will be held to-night. Earthquake.—A shock of earthquake was felt shortly after midnight on Tuesday in Gisborne. Telegrams record a similar shock in other places. Entertainment.—We have been requested to keep our readers in mind of the entertainments on behalf of the public Library, the first of which will be given on Monday next. Mrs. Cox.—Having disposed of the late Mr. Cox’s business to Mr. R. Johnstone, Mrs. Cox request that all outstanding accounts be paid at once.
Tenders.—The County Council are calling for tenders for a box shoot to be placed in Sheehan Street, North Gisborne. They are to be sent in by Monday next.
Pritchards.—The Pritchard Family’s benefit came off last night in McFarlane’s Hall, which was lighted with gas. The performance, especially of the Juvenile wonder, was frequently applauded. New Road District.—Steps are being taken by the Cook Cuunty Council to amend the boundaries of the Turanganui and Waikohu road districts, and constitute a new road district, particulars of which are notified by advertisement. This should be good news to those who think they can govern themselves in the matter of roads better than it is done at present. Lecture.—The large number of ladies and gentlemen who attended the Institute last evening were profuse in their applause, and testified to the success Mr. Warren had achieved in his lecture on Queen Mary. The lecturer was successful in painting Mary in much more favorable colors than those in which the majority of readers have been won’t to view her. Several gentlemen took part in a debate which followed, and the usual compliments concluded a very pleasant evening. Next Wednesday there will be a debate on the Temperance question, in which several well-known wearers of the blue ribbon are expected to take part.
Mutual Improvement.—We have been requested to draw attention to a new organization designed for the improvement and amusement of young men, viz., the Gisborne Wesleyan Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Society. From an elaborate little programme just issued from the Telephone office we observe that the Rev. G. W. J. Spence is president, and Mr. J. E. Chenhall secretary and treasurer. The sylabus comprises essays on Sir Henry Havelock, Dr. Carey (the Indian Missionary), John Wickcliffe, Proverbs of Solomon, The Dynasties of Earth (past, present, and future), Music, and Photography. In addition to these there will be debates, readings and recitations, and other items which cannot fail to interest, while at the same time conveying instruction. Further particulars can be obtained on application.
Leave it Out.—We are annoyed almost daily with applications to leave out reports of matters, and we wish persons making such requests to understand that they will save themselves the indignity of receiving our refusal by not making the applications. The Telephone is published for the benefit of the general public, and not for the aggrandisement or pleasure of individuals. If people will get into Court or in other ways heap obloquy on themselves they must take the consequences. We are in hopes that the fear of publication will to some extent deter people from the commission of deeds of which they are ashamed. It is only by adopting such a course that they can keep unpleasant reports from appearing in our columns. Let one and all endeavor to remove the cause and the effect will disappear. In the majority of cases we find that those who expect most consideration from us are those who give us least support.
In Bankruptcy.—A meeting of the creditors in the estate of Mr. William Lysnar was held yesterday afternoon, for the purpose of taking into consideration the debtor’s application for discharge. Mr. E. K. Brown (trustee) was voted to the chair. He stated that the total amount of claims proved was £46 10s.; assets realised £5 Ils. He had been paid a cheque for £lO given by Mr. George Stubbs, which was not provided for at the Bank. Mr. Lewis: How about this cheque of Mr. Stubbs’ ? Mr. Brown said that Mr. G. Stubbs had paid £1 17s. on account of the cheque of £lO, which was given to him by Mr. Lysnar, being the amount received by him for his (Lysnar’s) interest in a deferred payment section, Patutahi. Stubbs had got an assignment of this section from Lysnar. Mr. Stubbs had been sued by him for that amount and had confessed judgment. Mr. Friar said that this was a most unsatisfactory position for the creditors to be in. Mr. Lewis moved that the trustee take proceedings against Mr. Stubbs for the recovery of the balance of the £lO cheque. He thought Mr. G. Stubbs’ action in this matter was very sharp, to say the least of it. Mr. Friar seconded the proposition, which on being put was carried. It was further resolved that the consideration of the bankrupt’s discharge be held over.
