The Tonquin War.
[reuter’s telegrams.] Paris, August 16. In the Chamber of Deputies to-day a vote of credit of 76,000,000 francs for defraying expenses in connection with the settlement of Tonquin, was passed by a substantial majority. In his speech on the occasion M. Ferry remarked that the vote of the Chamber would materially strengthen the faith of the French Government in dealing with China. London, August 17. The statement made by the Times yesterday that China has declared war against France is still unconfirmed. It has transpired that a Note recently addressed to the Treaty Powers by the Chinese Government, protested strongly against the action of France, and invoked the meditation of the Powers with a view to bring about a peaceful solution of the matter.
