New Zealand. Shipping Co.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, August 6. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s eleventh annual report shows the ordinary service by the direct steamers to have given a profit of £30,093, after providing all costs of the inauguration of the scheme ; but in consequence of the charter of the Catalona, through the default of the Doric, there was a loss of £18,472, which is met by transferring £20,000 from the reserve fund. Two new steamers of about 4,750 tons each (Kaikoura add Remutuka) have been contracted for, to be completed in September and October respectively. These will enable the company to conduct the monthly service without chartering steamers. Sailing ships continue valuable adjunct to the steamers and the company still charters considerable sailing tonnage. The directors do not propose to fill the vacancy on the Board caused by the death of Mr. Tancred. Mr. Wm. Pearce (of John Elder & Co.) has joined the London Board of Advice.
