The Elections.
[Per Press Association.] MR. BRYCE. Wanganui, July 21. Mr. Bryce addressed a meeting at Aramoho on Saturday night. He defended himself against the attacks of his opponents, and upheld the actions of the Government. He asserted that a coalition between Sir George Grey and Major Atkinson could not at present be contemplated. He received a unanimous vote of thanks and confidence. MR. MONTGOMERY. Christchurch, July 21. Mr. Montgomery addressed a meeting at Governors Bay on Saturday night. He deprecated adding deficiency in revenue to permanent debenture, and denied that he ever advocated Insular Separation, which he regarded as impossible. He was in favor of Decentralisation, aud Self Government, similar to County form of Government in England. He advocated abolishing the tax upon improvements and moveable property, and the imposition of an income tax. He was opposed to any interference with the education system. He was in favor of the West Coast railway being made by a syndicate if it could be done on favorable terms, if not it should be made out of the first loan. He would support the protective duties to a reasonable extent. He repeated his views on several public questions, but made no reference to Sir Julius Vogel.
Mr. Fergusson has definitely retired from the Sydenham contest.
It is stated that Mr: Wansey’s nomination for Stanmore has been discovered to be informal.
Sir George Grey addressed a crowded meeting of the electors of Manukau at the Onehunga hall on Saturday night last. A resolution acknowledging Sir George as the leader of the Liberal Party, was carried unanimously, and the meeting terminated with cheers for Messrs. O’Rorko and Lawry, candidates for the seat.
