THE ELECTIONS.
[Per Press Association.] At Christchurch a telegram has been received from Mr. J. L. Coster, from Hobart, placing his services at the disposal of the Heathcote electors. Mr. S. P. Andrews has retired from Stanmore on account of business arrangements. At a meeting of the Railway League at Christchurch, the following resolution was unanimously adopted, “ That candidates for election to Parliament be respectfully requested to oppose the extension of the Middle Island trunk line northward to or southward from Blenheim by way of the East Coast, and to support the construction by syndicate or the Government of a line to connect Canterbury with the West Coast. Mr. S. R. Webb addressed the electors at Lyttelton last night. He declared himself a strong opponent to the Government, and ready to "follow any leader who would turn them out. A vote of confidence was carried. Mr. W. Gibson addressed the electors of Cheviot at Amerley on Wednesday. He said he was opposed to the present Government, and would support Sir Julius Vogel if he could get good government together. A vote of confidence was carried.
