CRICKET.—AUSTRALIANS V. GENTLEMEN OF ENGLAND. London, June 27. The cricket match Australians v. Gentlemen of England was resumed to day on the Kensington Oval, in splendid weather and before a large attendance of spectators. The Gentlemen, with two wickets down for 91, continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 261, or 32 ahead of the Australians. The highest scorers were:—Studd, b, 10 ; Lucus, b, 18 ; Grace, c, 107; Reade, b, 25; Steel, c, 24 ; Lord Harris, stumped, 35 ; Diver, c, 20. The Australians then went in for their second innings, and at the close of the day’s play the score stood at 150 with six wickets down.
The match was resumed to-day in the presence of an enormous number of spectators by whom the greatest interest was taken in the match. The weather was fine, and the wicket lively. The second innings of the Australians closed for 219. The highest scorers were :—Bannerman, c, 48; Murdoch, c, 29 ; Blackham, b, 21; Bonner, b, .30; Midwinter, not out, 47. The gentlemen, requiring 188 runs to win, went in the second time, but owing to the splendid bowling of the Australians, only succeeded in scoring 141. The visitors thus won the match by 46. In the second innings of the gentlemen, the highest scorers were; —Grace, c, 32; Studd, o, 23 ; Lucus, b, 21; Steel, c and b, 22. FOOTBALL. [Per United Press Association.] Nelson, June 30. At the football match between Nelson and Wellington Colleges, there was a good attendance, but the ground was very wet. Nelson won by two goals and two tries to nil. Oamaru, June 30. The football match Oamaru v. Dunedin, resulted in a draw.
