BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fornightly meeting of the above was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Townley, Lewis, Joyce, Hepburn, Moore, and Brown. The minutes of last meeting, and the outgoing correspondence were read. Incoming Correspondence. The following telegram from W. Seed was read: —“ Re plans of bridge over the Turanganui River, the Marine Engineer reports that the plans with certain alterations, may be approved. Another proposal, however, was made, that by using the bridge over the Taruheru, building another over the Waimata, and joining these by a road, and making a short piece of road from the Waimata to join the present line of road, a considerable saving would be made, and more room would be left for the accommodation of vessels in the Turanganui river. I presume the proposal was fully considered before the bridge over the Turanganui was decided upon.” Cr. Tuchen said it was another person interested who wished to have the bridge over the Waimata. The Chairman thought the name should be given. Cr. Townley said that Mr. Gannon was the name of person. He had gone to Wellington for that purpose. Cr. Joyce wished to know if it would, not be better to have the bridge lower down the river at Harris street. After discussion Cr. Lewis said a motion should be tabled to rescind the former resolution inside which they had agreed to have the bridge ovei' the Turanganui River. He thought they should keep to that site. The Chairman read the telegram which he had sent in reply to the one received, as follows .—Your telegram of the 14th re Turanganui Bridge. The Waimata scheme was fully considered by the Council and rejected. Gladstone Road for many reasons being decided as the proper site. We presume the proposal re Waimata Bridge is from a private source, and should not be considered. Cr. Lewis proposed that the telegram be acknowledged, and state that this Council endorses the Chairman’s reply. Any further information to be supplied if necessary by letter. Cr. Brown seconded. Carried. A letter was received from Mr. J. Shrimpton re the Roebuck Road drain, drawing attention to the fact that Dr. Pollen was of opinion that it was the cause of much sickness
in that locality, and again requesting it to be filled in. As the Engineer had made a report on the drain, it was decided to discuss the matter after reading his report,
Engineer’s Report. Pump at Ferry.—The old pump having become useless, 1 have had a new one fitted as it is important to have a supply of water here.
Roebuck Road, North.— As instructed I have prepared plans and specifications for forming and metalling this road, and filling in the large drain on the Eastern side. The cost, metalled with beach shingle, would be £l4O. The drain might be filled up and the water diverted for £2O. If this work only is done, it would be better to employ day labor. Street Crossings.— A good pavement could be made with concrete blocks, say 12 x 6 x 8, deep granted with cement and sand, at a cost of Is. per superficial foot. A crossing six feet wide across Gladstone Road, would cost £2. A crossing made of totara blocks on end could cost considerably more. A crossing might be made of concrete 4 inches thick, at aboutlCd. per superficial foot or £9 10s. for a crossing 6ft wide across Gladstone Road. This would not stand near so well as the blocks. Contracts.—The contractor is not making rapid progress in this job. Childers Road.—Good progress has been made with this work, about ten chains of roadway having been formed and metalled, and an additional length has been formed, I recommend a progress payment of £7O (being the first), to the contractor. Roebuck Road Drain. Cr. Tutchen moved that the above drain be filled in, and the road, and the footpath on one side be formed and metalled. Cr. Hepburn moved as an amendment that the drain only be filled in. Seconded by Cr. Brown and carried. Cr. Joyce moved that tenders be called for the work. Cr. Townley seconded. Cr. Tutchen moved as an amendment that it be done by day labor. Cr, Lewis seconded, Carried, Street Crossings. On the motion of Cr. Tutchen it was decided to let the matter of street crossings stand over until the next meeting. Hospital, £2O; J. R. Hurry, £6 2t. 3d.: Returning .Officer, £1 Is.; D. Malone, £7O; W. E. Cross, £4 45.; Large and Townley, £1 Ils. Gas Supply. The Clerk stated that Mr. Sigley had been employed by the County Council and the library to fit up their offices with gas. He (Mr. Sigley) came and gave him an estimate of what he would do it for, for their three offices. He wished to know if he would employ Mr. Sigley to do the work. Cr. Tutchen moved that the Clerk be instructed to get a price from each of the gasfitters in the town. After some further conversation it was resolved to do that. Overdue Rent. The Clerk mentioned with regard to the section out at Patutahi which had been leased to a man named William*, and who had lately died, that he had been unable to get the rent of it for the last year, viz., £3O. He had seen Mrs. Williams lately, and she said she was trying to d : spose of the interest, and could not now afford the money. It was decided to write to the solicitor of Mrs. Williams, informing him that unless the money was paid, they would have to annul the lease. Fire Brigade Shed. Cr. Brown said something should be done to repair the piping, leading into the well from the river, as at low tide, there was little or no water in the well.
The Engineer was ordered to see to the work, and have it carried out.
