The Soudan War.
[Reuter’s Telegrams.] ACTIVE PREPARATIONS FOR THE DESPATCH OF TROOPS. London, May 20. The Government has invited tenders for engines to propel thirty river launches, which it is understood will be used for conveying troops up the river Nile. There are also other signs in connection with the transport service, which indicate that active preparations are being made for the early despatch of the expedition of British troops to the Soudan. Political News. [Per Press Association.] Christchurch, May 22. It is stated that the member for Cheviot Mr. Mcllwrath, intends to resign, and Messrs. Alf. Saunders, G. M. Adams, and Trutherford, are mentioned as probable candidates. Auckland, May 22. The Hon. E. Mitchelson has definitely determined to stand for re-election for Marsden against all-comets. He has received two deputations from Whangarei urging him to this course. To-night Sir George Grey addresses his City East constituency. It is understood that a considerable portion of his address will be devoted to criticising Major Atkinson’s speech.
