[Per United Press Association.] STRANDING OF THE SYRIA. Auckland, May 22. The Penguin has arrived from Fiji. Files state that the ship Syria was stranded off Nusalai Point. The Syria left Calcutta on March 22, with 480 coolies for Fiji, and she struck on a reef while in stays off Radavu. The officers and crew of the Penguin aided materially in rendering assistance in rescuing the crew and laborers of the stranded ship. Many of the coolies left the vessel and doubtlessly swam to the shore. THE EDUCATION ACT. Blenheim, May 22. A petition has been signed by 300 Roman Catholics praying for an amendment of the Education Act, and was handed in to-day to Mr. Dodson, M.H.R., for presentation. Wellington, May 22. The steamer Aorangi takes 5,000, and the Victory 4,000 carcases of frozen mutton from Wellington. LARGE FIRES. Christchurch, May 22. A fire occurred last night, by which a seven roomed house occupied by John Warden, was destroyed. Insurances £250. The origin is unknown.
Dunedin, May 22. A fire occurred at the Taieri on Tuesday morning by which Fowler’s blacksmith’s shop and stables were destroyed. A pony and a cow were burned. The loss is £3OO, and there is no insurance on the property. THE KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL. Messrs. Scott Bros, iron founders, of Christchurch, write to the Kaiapoi Borough Council that it is incumbent upon them to vindicate their charater in a court of law. This is in consequence of the Council refusing to allow Scotts to sublet to an ex-councillor, alleging as a reason for the refusal that they had arranged matters with the ex-councillor before his resignation. INQUEST.
An inquest has been held at the Tuapeka Hospital touching the death of a patient named William Tubes. He was ordered the following prescription : chloral hydrate, 2dr., scrup. aurantii of aquisi 8 oz., to be taken in 1 oz. doses. He took three doses at regular intervals and then swallowed the remainder at one dose to ease his pain he said. The doctors gave him an emetic. The man died four or five days afterwards. The medical evidence was to the effect that he died from softening of the stomach, and that the patient had been known to take three times the quantity of the same mixture without experiencing any ill effect. The jury found a verdict of death from natural causes. THE DERWENTWATER CLAIMANT. Auckland, May 22. Among the passengers by the Crusader were Lovegrove, the victimized claimant to the Derwentwater estates, and his family. Wanganui, May 22. A party of prospectors sent up by the Wanganui Prospecting Company returned to town yesterday, not being allowed to go on to the country which they went up to test. The party was very well treated by the natives, but Whanui objected to their going into Tahua territory, the proper ownership of which is disputed, and they returned. EARTHQUAKE. A shock of earthquake was felt in town last night about half-past seven, accompanied by a loud rumbling noise. FOUND DEAD. A man named Peter Bailey was found dead on a by-road near Maxwelltown, about 15 miles from Wanganui, last evening. He had been working at the Maxwelltown Hotel, and on the previous evening took his swag and left. Nothing more was seen of him till yesterday, when his body was found. The particulars to hand of the affair are very meagre, and nothing is known as to whether any marks of violence are perceptable on the body.
