[Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, May 19. The sum of £B9 has been collected at the morning service in the First Church, to erect a monument over the grave of the Rev. L. Mackie, late pastor of the church. The total collections amounted to £ll2. THE LATE EXPLOSION. A plumber, named William Walker, was severely injured by an explosion, while making certain alterations in the Princess Theatre. He placed a lighted candle on the top of one of the lime light metres, supposed to be empty, when an explosion followed. His face was terribly cut, and all his teeth but one were knocked out.

The s.s. Aorangi left for Lyttelton with a cargo valued at £27,567.

The ship Waimate, Captain Morey, has arrived from London.

Great anxiety is felt here regarding the non-arrival at the Bluff of the barque Coorong, which left Port Chalmers on April 26th.

The barque Lotona, from Timaru to Cork, will discharge cargo and go into dock for survey, her Captain having failed to report grounding when coming in. A searching enquiry is to be held. The Waimate’s passage occupied 101 days. She spoke the barque Embleton, from Auckland to London, in lat. 5 deg. S.

Greymouth, May 19. A cheque for £92 13s, has been presented to the wife of Sergeant O'Grady, as a mark of sympathy in her losses by the late fire. A heavy sea carried away a considerable quantity of stone work at Tip Head. Heavier blocks being put in to protect the work. The port has been blocked all the week by heavy seas and freshes. ACCIDENTAL DEATH. Auckland, May 17. At the inquest on the body of Jas. Mantel, clerk of works, aged 70, and who was formerly on the West Coast, resulted in a verdict to the effect that death was caused from the effects of a burn accidentally received a fortnight ago, accelerated by neglect to obtain medical aid. A STRANGE ACCIDENT. A cow on the line threw the engine of the Waikato train off the rails, and the driver, stoker, and a couple of passengers were a good deal shaken, but were not seriously injured. A young man who was standing on the platform, was thrown 30 yards by the shock. Christchurch, May 17. At the inquest on Falvey, who was poisoned at Rakaia, the evidence showed that the jug into which the whisky had been poured from the jar, that it might .be poured into the bottle, had previously been used to mix vinegar and strychnine for poisoning animals, and had not been washed. The vinegar would not dissolve the chrystals which would adhere to the jug, but spirits would. Open verdict. INCENDIARISIM. An unoccupied boarding house of 22 rooms, next to the Gladstone Hotel, in Peterborough street, was destroyed by fire early this morning, it was evidently the work of an incendiary. The insurances are unknown. DISTRESSING SUICIDE. F. W. Brooke, employed at the Kaiapoi Woollen Factory, committed suicide yesterday by cutting his throat. Tie had suffered from ill health and low spirits for some time. Wellington, May 19. An old woman named Pyke committed suicide at the Upper Hutt on Saturday. She threw herself into the river, and was seen by her husband, who sprang in after her, but was unable to save her. Mrs. Pyke is believed to have been of weak intellect. THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY. The Government, after consultirg with the Governor, have decided not to alter the arrangements made for celebrating the Queen’s Birthday this month in Wellington and Canterbury. The holiday will be held on the 26th, and at Auckland, Otago and otherplaces on the 21th inst.
