(reuter’s telegrams.) NEW GERMAN LINE OF MAIL SERVICE. Berlin, May 16. The Bundesrath has voted an annual subsidy of four million marks for a line of German mail steamers to Australia and the East. The North German Lloyd Royal Mail Steamship Co. has proposed to the Government to undertake a subsidied mail service to Australia and the East. HOSTILTIES IN ZULULAND.—DEFEAT OF THE FRIENDLY TRIBES. Cape Town, May 16. The latest news from Zululand, announce that an engagement has taken place near the booder of the reserve between Usutas and the friendly tribes, in which the latter were defeated, and Mr. Gisborne, resident commissioner, has consequently been compelled to retreat to Emtumen, (sic). St. Petersburg, May 16. Intelligence is to hand from Herat, Afghanistan, that the Turcomans resident there, have formally tendered their submission to Russia. London, May 17. It has now transpired that it is the Turcoman tribes on the Afghan frontier who have tendered their submission to Russia, and not the tribes at Herat, as stated in yesterday’s telegrams from St. Petersburg. THE STOCK EXCHANGE PANIC. New York, May 17. The panic on the Stock Exchange has now subsided, the banks having combined to act together for their mutual assistance. Enormous purchases of American stocks have been made during the past few days on European account.
