[Per United Press Association.] Wellington, March 19. The New Zealand Shipping Go’s British King which left London, for Auckland, a day or two ago, brings 304 Government immigrants. D. C. Maunsell, on a charge of embezzling Government monies, has been further remanded until Friday next. ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Christchurch, March 18, A bricklayer named Arthur Henry Brightmore, residing at Sydenham, attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself. The rope, however, broke, and thereby his life was saved. He has been pronounced insane by one medical man. A BOY ACCIDENTALLY SHOT. Nelson, March 18. A boy named Kelly, about 16 years of age, was accidentally shot through the right arm at the rifle butts this morning. The danger Hag was flying, but no notice was taken of it. Both bones of the arm were broken. INQUEST ON WALL AND CO.’S FIRE.— DIFFICULTY OF THE POLICE IN OBTAINING EVIDENCE. Auckland, March 19. An enquiry was commenced yesterday on the recent fire at Messrs. Wall and Co.’s drapers, Queen street. Supt. Thompson complained of many obstacles thrown in the way of the police in prosecuting enquiries respecting the fire, and stated that not only had he been impeded by Mr. Wall, but by his assistants down to the shop boy. The enquiry was adjourned for a fortnight to take the evidence of a witness at Christchurch, who was in Mr Wall's employ when the fire took place. ANOTHER MYSTERIOUS FIRE. Ross, March 19. A fire occurred at ten last night, which reduced to ashes the steam sawmill of Mr. Grimmond. The premises were insured in the Equitable Insurance Co. for £5OO, but this will not cover the loss. The origin of the fire is a mystery. Blenheim, March 19. A fire occurred at Granville’s fruit shop last night. The damage to the building and contents is about £lOO. Insurances—building, £lOO each in the Liverpool-London, Union, and National. The stock and furniture, £3OO in the Australian Mercantile. The origin of the fire was accidental. Hokitika, March 18. At the Supreme Court this morning the second jury in the arson case against Hughes and Maloney wore discharged, not having agreed. The prisoners were remanded till the next session, bail being allowed. This concluded the calender.
SUPREME COURT. Wanganui, March 18. In the Supreme Court yesterday Mr. Justice Richmond, in his address to the Grand Jury, remarked on the small number of charges. A true bill was returned against G. Caverhill for breaking and entering, Caverhill pleaded not guilty, and the hearing of the case was proceeded with. The jury brought in a verdict of “ guilty” of one count of breaking and entering with intent, and Caverhill was sentenced to 12 months’.
