LAST NIGHT'S WIRES.
[Per Association Telegrams.] Auckland, March 19. Over 1,000 kegs of butter were shipped to Sydney by the s.s. Rotomahana. There are great complaints as to the accommodation, and food, by immigrants on board the ship Northumberland, but the Captain and officers are favorably spoken of. Probably there will be an official enquiry. Wanganui, March 19. The Grand Jury returned a true bill against George Nicholson for stealing, and no bill against Higgins, arrested on a similar charge. Nicholas pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to two years imprisonment, to run concurrently with a similar sentence passed on him in Wellington, for the same offence. ’ Dunedin, March 19. A fatal accident occurred last night, five or six miles from the city, on North Road. A wood carter named Wm. Duffy, who was returning home, was found lying on the road, the wheel having evidently passed over him. He had a drink a short time previously at a roadside hotel, bnt the landlord says he was then quite capable of attending to his horse. Messrs. Dalgetty and Co. have received a c ,ble message to the effect that the s.s. Bombay arrived at Rio on the 16th inst. Her meat was in prime condition. Notwithstanding the Crown Solicitors advice to the contrary, the Land Board have recommended the Chief Commissioner to sue for trespass in the matter of the Silver Peak cases of dummyism. Christchurch, March 19. A tramway engine steampipe burst this afternoon, and the engine driver and a young lady jumped off the tram and received injuries, those of the latter are feared to be serious.
