Mr. Carlaw Smith was then called to the chair, and gave an outline of the progress of the company since last meeting, and called upon anyone present to ask questions. Dr. Pollen asked if Christchurch directors had not sanctioned the company obtaining the services of the Southern Cross Company’s borer for a short time. Mr. Smith said the application had been made and refused. Considerable discussion then ensued relating to obtaining the services of either Mr. Fesler or Mr. Weaver, and also as to the refusal of the Southern Cross Company in not allowing one of their managers to take temporary charge of the Pacific Company’s Works. Mr. Maud thought it advisable that Mr. Stubbs should resign his position on the Board of Advice, as he had not studied the interests of the company in this matter. Mr. E. ff. Ward regretted that any difference should arise between the two companies, as their interests were identical. After several propositions, Mr. E. ff. Ward proposed, te “ That the appointment of a borer in Mr. Weaver’s place be left to the Board of Advice.” This was seconded by Dr. Pollen, and carried. Mr. Newton moved, and Mr. B. C. Fryer seconded, “ That Mr. Ward be elected a member of the Board of advice vice W. H. Tucker, resigned.” Mr. B. Cooper moved, as an amendment, “ That Dr. Pollen be elected.” Mr. Bayley seconded the amendment, which was carried. A discussion next took place as to whether the members of the Local Board were limited to five in number. The Chairman said it was not limited to that number. Mr. H. McKay then moved, and Mr. W. Maude seconded, “ That Mr. E. ff. Ward be a member of the Local Board.” Carried. Mr. Rosie wished to know why a meeting had not been called for November last, and two members of the Local Board had not retired in due order. ■ The matter was referred to the Board of Directors. A vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings.
