BOROUGH COUNCIL,
The annual meeting of the above was yesterday morning, Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Lewis, Kenny, Brown, Tutchen, Hepburn, Joyce, Kn d captain Porter, the Mayor-elect, INSTALLATION OF MAYOR. ITis Worship thg Mayor briefly addressed the Council, congratulating tho Gisborne inhabitants on choosing a gentleman like Captain Porter as his successor, as he (his Worship) considered him so competent to do th'a duties necessary in that office. He tMn congratulated Captain Porter, this being the fourth time he had been elected to the office of Mayor. He said that the present members of the Council wore, without doubt, as good gentlemen as could have been returned by ratepayers, as they were so able to fulfil the works imposed upon them as members. He hoped they would get along as well in the time to uoine with ms successor us they had done with him He advised the Muyur-elect to avoid taxation as much as possible, and to keep his hands clear of big schemes, which the funds of the Borough were too scanty to afford. After a few further remarks, he vacated the chair to his successor, Captain T. VV. Porter, who followed with an appropriate address at considerable length. On the proposition of Cr. Lewis, seconded by Cr. Kenny, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring Mayor, who had conducted the business of the Council most satisfactorily. The retiring Mayor thanked the Council for their kind expressions.
THE NEXT MEETING. It was decided that the holding of the next Harbor Board meeting be left to his Worship the Mayor and the Secretary. This terminated the business.
