OIL V. COAL GAS.
The following letter his been received by E. ff. Ward, Esq., fro h Mr John Ross, of Melbourne :— “Melbourne, July 17, 1883. “ Dear Sir.--1 arrived here on the 11th, and take the earliest opportunity of writing you. J have been so busy with other matters that I cannot at this time give you the particulars about oil gas that I promised you, but I feel too much interested in it to fail you. The Beechworth Gas Company have thres to four miles of mains, lin. to 4in. piping, and laid on to 40 street lamps. Their gasometer (or holder) is 34ft. in diameter, and they have a brick building for works 12ft. x 20ft. The contract price for above was £5,250; and in addition to the completion of the works, the contractors had to run the works at their own expense for three months’ time. If you write Mr Crawford, the Chairman of the Beech worth Gas Company he will give you his opinion of the best system of oil gas in use. The one now in use in Beechworth is not the Dixon process. Mr Crawford hopes to have the Dixon process soon in use at the Company’s works. I think, as the oil prospects of your district are so promising, you ought to be getting your capital up for lighting your town with oil gas, for there is no question but the oil gas is the gas for you in any case.—Yours’ faithfully, John Ross
