COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.

The meeting of the Council was adjourned from last evening by the Chairman until this morning, when there were present—W. K. Chambers (in the chair), Crs. Johnson, Ferris, Westrupp, and Gannon. I The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. APPOINTMENT OF RANGER. F. Sanders was appointed ranger for Ormond district. RETURNING & PRESIDING OFFICER OF LICENSING DISTRICT. Two applications were received, me from Mr. T. W. Billham, and the other from Mr P. E. Richardson, for the position of Returning and Presiding Officer of the Patutahi Licensing District. • It was decided that as Mr Bilham resided in the district, he should be appointed. PATUTAHI DRAINS. The settlers of Patutahi wrote, asking that the drain might be cleared, and the Engineer was instructed to report upon the work and the cost. INSPECTION OF SLAUGHTER-HOUSES. Mr G. Davis applied for the position, but the Council resolved to request Mr J. Warren to act in the capacity without pay. HONORARY REGISTRAR OF DOGS. Mr Frank Arthur, of Maungatu district, accepted the above appointment. LICENSING OFFICER, G. A. Preece, Esq., R.M., wrote, notify, ing that he had been appointed as Licensing Officer for the Te Arai and Tologa Native Licensing Districts. The Clerk said that the proprietors of the Standard had informed him that if advertisements appeared in both papers relative to elections in these districts, they would charge the ordinary scale price, instead of that for which they had contracted. It was resolved that Mr Preece be instructed to advertise on in the contracting paper. A NUISANCE. Mr J. R. Scott wrote complaining that the nuisance arising from Mr Aislabie’s slaugh terhouse, was as bad as ever. Mr Aislabie, who was in attendance at the request of the Council, was infarmed by the Chairman of of the complaints made, and, after hearing his statement, was granted four weeks to erect premises on the banks of the Taruheru —the slaughter-house at Makaraka to be thoroughly cleansed or closed at once. DEFUTATION. A Deputation from the Borough Council, coDQlsttag of Crs. Smith and Ferris, waited on the Council in order to obtain permission for the tramway on the Ormond Road to remain ff,r 12 months. The subject was deferred for a for a fortnight, as the money grant, under the Roads and Bridges Bill might be an inducement towards the opening; of the Patutahi Quarry. WAIPAOA RIVER PROTECTION. The Engineer laid on the table a plan for t)i»e protection of the river banks near Orrflona, which were approved of and will be forwarded to the Government. Report.—The report of the Slaugter-house Committee was read and adopted. Poundage.—By-laws were decided to be drawn up to regulate Pounds, and a Committee appointed for that purpose. Mr Steggall not having sent in his pound returns the Clerk was instructed to inform him that if they were not sent in in & fortnight a clerk would be employed to copy them from the books. WATPAOA BRIDGE. The Engineer was directed to arrange with the contractor for the screwing up of Waipaoa Bridge, as to the deduction to be made owing to a deviation of the original contract.
